Synopsis: Assigned seating on an airplane has separated Donghae and Eunhyuk, to Eunhyuk's disappointment.
I wrote this on my mom's laptop during my plane ride to Brazil...and only recently got it off of there and on onto my computer. Here it is, finally! :D Please read and enjoy! ^ ^ /
Eunhyuk walked down the airplane aisle, looking between his boarding pass, the plaques above the seating rows, and back at Donghae, trying to remember where he was sitting, and if he had even asked him.
Why, he wondered, grimacing a little bit, hadn't he at least walked on with him?
He found his seat, threw one last glance at him, and sat down. He shoved his bag beneath the seat in front of him and then watched in disappointment as Donghae sat down a row ahead of him, on the opposite side of the plane. The chances of them sitting together with assigned seating in an like airplane like this were slim, he knew. He sighed, and was tempted to lean across and hit him and suggest that they sit together, but Eeteuk slipped in next to him and wondered aloud about the complimentary services and the time it would take them to get to their destination. As if the service would be any different, or the time was a mystery, Eunhyuk thought, narrowing his eyes at him, annoyed.
Eeteuk pursed his lips at Eunhyuk's expression, and Eunhyuk looked out of the window resignedly, ignoring Eeteuk's lilting interrogations about his mood.
It wasn't Eeteuk's fault. He was just a poor substitute for who Eunhyuk had really wanted to spend three hours with.
Eeteuk quieted down eventually and pulled his hat down over his tired eyes - which, as with most of the members' eyes, had heavy purple bags beneath them - and hugged his travel pillow.
Since he wasn't sitting next to Donghae, the best way to speed up time was to sleep. But he couldn't sleep, because he could see Donghae from where he was sitting, and every so often, Donghae would glance back at him.
It wasn't Donghae's fault either.
It was just assigned seating, and there was nothing they could do short of kicking Eeteuk out of his seat and making him trade with Donghae. Eunhyuk looked at Eeteuk's sleeping form and sighed. It's only three hours, he thought. It's not really worth it.
By now, Eunhyuk had gotten used to flying, and he no longer found it to be stressful. He barely even noticed as the plane departed and ascended into the sky. He didn't even notice when it leveled off again at high altitude and the flight attendant gave them permission to use electronic devices again. He didn't even register it when Eeteuk woke up and stretched. He didn't notice any of it, because he was preoccupied by looking at Donghae and wishing that he had arranged to sit next to him before they boarded.
"You want to sit next to him, don't you?"
Eunhyuk blinked and looked at Eeteuk, who was smiling at him out of the corner of his eye.
"No," Eunhyuk lied, blushing a little bit. "It's okay."
"Were you staring at him the entire time?"
He just looked at Eeteuk, giving away the answer.
"I'll ask him to switch with me."
"It's okay," he said again shyly. "It's no big deal."
"I want to sit next to Kangin anyway."
"Donghae's sitting next to him. I'm jealous."
"You're not seriously jealous..."
"Aren't you jealous, too?" Eeteuk reached down and retrieved his bag. "Why don't we just make this simple?"
Eeteuk stood up and winked at him as he made his way towards Donghae and tapped him on the shoulder. Eunhyuk blushed as Donghae glanced up, removed his headphones, and asked him what he wanted. Donghae glanced at Eunhyuk, and then stood up and gave his seat to Eeteuk. Eeteuk threw Eunhyuk a smile as he sat down and went right back to his sleeping position without saying more than two words to Kangin.
Donghae sat down and slung his headphones around his neck. He leaned across the armrest and spoke in a low voice next to Eunhyuk's ear.
"Did you know that Eeteuk really wanted to sit next to Kangin?"
"Really?" Eunhyuk asked innocently, feigning curiosity. He glanced at Eeteuk again, and he wasn't acting as if he was very happy to be sitting next to him. He was just sleeping.
"Yeah." Donghae smiled. "But he's been sleeping the whole time."
Donghae nodded and settled into his new seat. He looked at Eunhyuk for a few seconds, and then Eunhyuk watched as it dawned on him.
"Oh," he said softly. "You wanted to sit next to me."
"No, that's..." he trailed off as Donghae raised an eyebrow. "Yes."
Donghae smiled and put his headphones back on. He reached over and held Eunhyuk's hand so casually that anyone passing by probably wouldn't have even noticed. It just seemed so natural.
"Okay like this?" Donghae murmured, closing his eyes.
"Yes." Eunhyuk leaned his head back, and rather than go to sleep, counted the minutes and seconds, absolutely content to be doing nothing more than taking advantage of the small amount of time, the small intimacy, that a simple plane ride and an astute friend provided them with.
